In the summer of 2021, I decided I wanted to move from right outside New York City to Denver, Colorado since my current lease was going to be up in December 2021. I grew up in Connecticut and spent the entirety of my adult life in New York and New Jersey, so this was quite a change for me.

I would be leaving behind everything I was comfortable with, including living in a city I knew like the back of my hand and never being further than 3 hours from my family.

Not to mention I had no idea how to even go about moving across the country. Or how to find a place to live once I got there.

The first thing I did was start to research. A lot. I joined Facebook groups that included people who had made a similar move as I wanted to do, read as many blog posts as I could find on the topic of living in Denver, and started browsing Zillow to get a feel for what homes even looked like in Colorado.

As I started to look through home listings, I realized that quite a few listings were adorable townhouses, complete with beautiful interior staircases, balconies, and roof decks — totally different from any home I had previously lived in.

I felt myself overwhelmed with excitement now that I knew this was a possibility for me, and began to journal about my dream townhouse. In particular, I began scripting about exactly what my dream home looked like, talking in the past tense as if I had already found my home.

Here a few excerpts right from my journal during the months leading up to my move:

July 21, 2021

“I’m filled with so much excitement and gratitude it feels incredible! Rob and I just moved to Colorado after we both landed new jobs that we’re so excited about – they’re intellectually stimulating, exciting, fun, and we work only 9 to 5 (with summer Fridays and unlimited PTO!). We found the perfect apartment so easily – it has lots of glass windows, a modern interior with a beautiful kitchen, hardwood floors, 2 bedrooms, and an outdoor space our puppy can play in! It's in a safe, quaint neighborhood that has little shops we can walk to – including a coffee shop, cocktail bar, and grocery store. There’s a Whole Foods not too far away so we can still get groceries delivered! The move was so easy – we had a moving company bring our furniture and we road tripped the way over in our lovely car. I’m so grateful for everything we have and so excited for this next adventure. And so it is.”

“Rob and I just moved to the perfect apartment in Colorado Springs and I am so happy. The apartment is in the downtown area so we are within walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops, bars, parks, and grocery stores. The apartment itself is gorgeous – it’s modern with wood floors, white countertops, beautiful appliances, a washer/dryer, a balcony with a gorgeous view of the mountains, and floor to ceiling windows. There is the perfect amount of space for Rob and I to put our standing desks and the apartment feels so spacious and clean.”

“I also desire to move to Denver with Rob, and live in a beautiful apartment or townhouse/house paying $2,800 or less per month in rent. The apartment has modern appliances, light wood cabinets, a balcony, floor to ceiling windows, hardwood floors, plenty of space for our 2 desks to [work from home] and our Peloton (and puppy!), and is clean and in LoHi. Rob and I easily find movers to help us get our stuff to Denver and we have the best time road tripping across the country before we move in. I feel free, happy, confident, abundant, and like I’ve found my purpose. I’m so grateful.”

“Everything feels like it’s working out for me and I’m so happy. I feel the perfect apartment in Denver coming to me, and it’s going to be ready for us with a move in date of December 27 or January 1. It is a townhome with multiple levels, a backyard and terrace/roof deck, lots of natural light, hardwood floors, white countertops, light colored cabinets, a modern/clean feel, in LoHi or Jefferson Park or Sloane’s Lake, and is less than $3,000 per month (and allows dogs!). I feel it getting ready for me and Rob and know it’s going to find its way to us at the perfect time.”

October 13, 2021

“We moved into our dream townhouse in Denver today, and I’m so grateful and overjoyed! It has 3 levels, a roof deck, and a backyard with space for a patio and twinkle lights. It is so modern, with hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, and white cabinets. There is so much natural light, and plenty of space for Rob and I to have our home offices as well as a bedroom and gym area. The townhouse is in the perfect location – near LoHi – and has a safe, walkable neighborhood where we can walk to a little grocery store and a coffee shop. The garage is the perfect size for our car and bikes, and the townhouse just feels like home. I’m so grateful that we found the home so easily, and that it was ready for us at the perfect time (end of December 2021) and is exactly in our price range ($2800/month) – AND they allow dogs, so when we find our Bernedoodle puppy he’ll be all set to come home. I’m so grateful for how easily everything works out for me, and I’m so grateful that the Universe always has my back.”

In addition to writing these kinds of journal entries, I also printed out pictures of my dream townhouse and put it on my vision board so I could see it every day and let myself be filled with the same excitement I felt as I scripted about living in this home.

Next, I started taking action to prepare for the logistics of the move, such as researching moving companies, planning exactly what we’d be able to bring with us to our new home, and decluttering my current apartment to both be ready to move and also make sure my energy was right as I worked on manifesting the move and my dream home.

I also decided to book a trip to Denver to be able to visit different areas and see a few townhomes in person. When I arrived, I searched Zillow and wrote to a few different people expressing my interest in renting their homes.

Throughout the week, I toured a few different townhouses, but none felt like they were quite right – they didn’t match the vision I had in my mind of what my dream home would look like, so I decided to wait.

It was a bit nerve-wracking to turn down homes when I knew my move was coming at the end of the following month, but I trusted the right home was still on its way.

Mid-way through the week, I got an email about one of the homes I had inquired about on Zillow. The woman who owned the property asked if I would be available to come tour that weekend. I informed her that I was flying out early Saturday morning, and asked if there was any chance I could come for a quick tour any time before then. She responded that she’d ask the current tenants if they could make an exception to allow me to come visit ahead of the scheduled open house, as they too had moved from out of state and had been able to get a special tour when they were in town visiting.

I soon heard back that the tenants had agreed to give us a tour the following evening. As soon as they opened the door to welcome us in, I knew this was our new home.

Just as I had scripted, I walked up the stairs to the first floor and saw a beautiful kitchen filled with white countertops, stainless steel appliances, and light-colored wood cabinets. The entire home had hardwood floors, and one wall of the living room was filled with floor to ceiling windows, along with a sliding glass door that led out to a large balcony. A gorgeous metal staircase led up to the next floor, where there were 2 bedrooms, one of which was the perfect size for an office. The large main bedroom had a spot for our Peloton, and the bedroom had a large window that let in lots of natural light. Another staircase led up to our own private rooftop from which we could see both the city and the mountains. We headed back downstairs and learned we also would have our own two car garage, which meant plenty of space for our car and bikes, as well as extra space left over to put a little home gym.

The townhome itself was in a cute neighborhood just as I had described in my journal, and was within walking distance of coffee shops, restaurants, a grocery store, and large park that was often frequented by people playing with their dogs.

It was early November when we visited, but we learned the current tenants weren’t planning on leaving until mid-December. This meant our lease could start on December 26, 2021, just one day prior to what I had scripted. And the rent would be $3,100/month, just a few hundred dollars off from what I had hoped to find as well.

We went on to sign our lease, find movers to pack our U-box which we then shipped across the country, and had a wonderful time on our drive out to Denver.

Based on my experience, here are my key takeaways when it comes to manifesting your dream home:

  1. You don’t know what is possible until you open and expand your mind. Don’t limit yourself to what you currently know, but allow yourself to do some research and dream big and choose what truly lights you up. I had never imagined I’d be living in a beautiful townhome like this, but mainly because I hadn’t know this option existed!

  2. Once you’ve decided what you want, live in the feeling of it already being yours. My favorite ways to do this are through scripting, visualizing, and printing out actual photos to look at to keep these thoughts and feelings top of mind.

  3. Allow yourself to feel into your dream home being yours as many times as possible throughout the day. As you journal, visualize, and meditate on the feeling of your dream home being yours, incredible shifts happen to bring it into your reality.

  4. Take action! Start thinking about what actions you can take to create opportunities for your dream home to find you.

  5. Don’t give up if it doesn’t immediately work out – we never know when we’re being guided in a new and better direction. Trust that everything is working out for you, and be ready to receive your dream home when it arrives.
